| Time in your chosen apps today | What the boss does |
|---|---|
| 10 minutes | "I see you." |
| 1 hour | "An hour on social media. I'm still watching." |
| 2 hours | "Two hours. This is going in your file." |
| 4 hours | "You're fired." |
| During a task (Premium) | The apps you picked stay frozen until the timer ends. |
These are the exact messages the app sends. You choose which apps count.
Why you can't stop scrolling (it's not a character flaw)
Three things work against you at once:
- The feed never ends. There's no last page, and the next video might be the good one. Unpredictable rewards are the strongest kind of hook.
- Nobody sees it. Scrolling happens alone, in bed, on the toilet, "for a minute". No witness means no cost in the moment.
- Time disappears. Ten minutes and an hour feel the same while you're in it. You only see the damage on the Screen Time chart, days later.
Why Screen Time limits don't work for most people
Apple's built-in limits are a good start, and they're free. But the limit screen has an Ignore Limit button, and after a week most people tap it without reading. The limit also tells you nothing about what the time cost you, and nobody notices when you blow past it.
What actually helps: friction, a witness and a price
Research and experience point to the same three levers. Friction makes opening the app slower: a 2023 study in PNAS found that a short pause before opening social apps made people open them less. A witness makes scrolling visible to someone else. A price turns lost time into something you can feel. Different tools pull different levers:
| Approach | How it works | Easy to skip? | Anyone notices? |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS Screen Time limits | A daily time limit per app | Yes, one tap | No |
| Friction apps (e.g. one sec) | A pause before the app opens | You can still open it | No |
| Blockers (e.g. Opal, Brick) | Apps blocked on a schedule or with a device | Harder | No |
| Productivity Boss | A boss watches, messages you and freezes apps during tasks (Premium) | Not in Strict mode | Yes. The boss. |
We make Productivity Boss, so weigh this table with that in mind. Plenty of people combine a blocker with a to-do app; we put both in one place.
How Productivity Boss handles scrolling
- Pick the apps that eat your day. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, whatever it is. The app reads time through Apple's Screen Time API, and that data stays on your iPhone.
- Plan your tasks in hours and start the clock. The boss watches from Boss Cam while the timer runs, on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island too.
- Drift off, and he texts you. 10 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours. You'll know exactly how bad it is.
- Premium: App freeze. Lock the apps during a task, for an hour, or at a daily limit. With Strict mode on, there's no unlocking early.
What does your scrolling cost?
The app pays you by the hour for real work. So here's the same math for the hours you spend scrolling:
When this app is not for you
- You scroll mostly on a computer. Productivity Boss is iPhone only. Use a desktop blocker for your laptop.
- You want to keep the apps but hide Reels and Shorts. A feed filter will suit you better than a boss.
- Scrolling is hurting your sleep, work or relationships badly. An app can help, but talking to a professional is worth it.
Questions people ask
Why can't I stop scrolling even when I want to?
Endless feeds give unpredictable rewards, nobody sees you do it, and time feels shorter than it is. Wanting to stop isn't enough; you need friction, a witness or a cost.
Is there an app that stops you from scrolling?
Yes. Blockers lock apps, friction apps slow you down, and Productivity Boss adds a strict boss who watches the apps you pick, messages you, and with Premium freezes them while you work.
Do Screen Time limits on iPhone actually work?
They help some people, but the Ignore Limit button is one tap away. Limits work better with something that adds a cost or a witness.
Can Productivity Boss block TikTok and Instagram?
Yes, with Premium. App freeze locks the apps you choose during a task, for an hour, or at a daily limit. On the free plan the boss watches and messages you.
Can I turn the block off?
Normally you can unlock early. With Strict mode on, you can't switch the lock off until the task's timer ends.
Does the app see what I do inside TikTok?
No. It uses Apple's Screen Time API and only knows how much time you spent in the apps you picked. That data stays on your iPhone.
Is it free?
Yes. The boss, tasks, timers, virtual pay and Screen Time check-ins are free. Premium adds App freeze, Strict mode, Finish early and Streak freeze.
